Every window is a one-off that has to fit the original design, and <strong>the risk of falling back on manual work<\/strong> is always there. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Stuyts faced this challenge when it made new wood windows for the former Halenstraat fire station in Antwerp (Belgium)<\/strong> on a Weinig Vario MC 50 machining center. Construction started in <strong>1911 <\/strong>and finished in 1913. <strong>The building served as a fire station until 1947 and was later turned into social housing<\/strong>. Today it is a protected historic landmark, so any work on it must keep its historic character intact.  <\/p>\n<p>The fa\u00e7ade still has its original look. Above the two large entrance arches, where the fire trucks once drove out, the word <em>Brandweer <\/em>is carved in stone. It means &#8220;fire department&#8221; in Dutch. <strong>On the ground floor, the main doors are large round-arched wood frames divided into panels<\/strong>. On the upper floors, the windows sit between the small stone columns that decorate the facade. The tower has a large arched window.   <\/p>\n<p>The new wood windows and doors were built by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuyts.be\/\">Stuyts<\/a><\/strong>, a Belgian woodworking company founded in 1892. It is based in Zoersel, a few miles from Antwerp. The company works in two areas: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>custom interiors<\/strong>, such as kitchens and bookcases;<\/li>\n<li><strong>windows, doors and exterior work<\/strong>: wood windows, entry doors, fa\u00e7ade cladding and gates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stuyts has combined traditional craftsmanship and new technology for more than a century, so the Halenstraat fire station was a natural test.<strong> The job was to reproduce early-1900s shapes with a modern production process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-3 fusion-flex-container has-pattern-background has-mask-background nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1372.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-2 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-2 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:var(--awb-typography2-font-size);\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"font-family:var(--awb-typography2-font-family);font-weight:var(--awb-typography2-font-weight);font-style:var(--awb-typography2-font-style);margin:0;letter-spacing:var(--awb-typography2-letter-spacing);text-transform:var(--awb-typography2-text-transform);font-size:1em;line-height:var(--awb-typography2-line-height);\">Why Are Curved and Angled Windows Hard to Automate?<br\/><\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-3\"><p>A rectangular window follows rules you can repeat. Stiles and rails meet at 90\u00b0, the profiles are straight, and you set up the joints once. <strong>In the windows of the former fire station, almost none of these rules apply<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Making these windows involved three kinds of complexity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>the arches are made of several segments<\/strong>, joined along the curve. An arch this large can&#8217;t be cut from a single piece of wood; <\/li>\n<li><strong>rails and stiles meet the arch<\/strong> at a different angle at every contact point;<\/li>\n<li><strong>the frames have angled or curved sides<\/strong>, which create trapezoid-shaped or wedge-shaped panels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the Engineering team, this means every part has its own shape. The profiling has to follow the curve, the joints have to fit at non-standard angles, and the joint holes have to line up between curved and straight parts. A mistake on one arch segment often shows up only at assembly, when the frame won&#8217;t close.  <\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why a powerful machine and good software aren&#8217;t enough to automate work at this level. <strong>You need a programming strategy<\/strong> in place before you create the first program: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>how to split the arch into segments;<\/li>\n<li>in what order to machine the parts;<\/li>\n<li>how to clamp them on the table;<\/li>\n<li>which tools to use for profiling along the curve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-4 fusion-flex-container has-pattern-background has-mask-background nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row fusion-flex-align-items-flex-start fusion-flex-content-wrap\" style=\"max-width:1372.8px;margin-left: calc(-4% \/ 2 );margin-right: calc(-4% \/ 2 );\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-3 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-flex-column\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-width-large:100%;--awb-margin-top-large:0px;--awb-spacing-right-large:1.92%;--awb-margin-bottom-large:20px;--awb-spacing-left-large:1.92%;--awb-width-medium:100%;--awb-order-medium:0;--awb-spacing-right-medium:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-medium:1.92%;--awb-width-small:100%;--awb-order-small:0;--awb-spacing-right-small:1.92%;--awb-spacing-left-small:1.92%;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-justify-content-flex-start fusion-content-layout-column\"><div class=\"fusion-title title fusion-title-3 fusion-sep-none fusion-title-text fusion-title-size-two\" style=\"--awb-margin-top-small:10px;--awb-margin-right-small:0px;--awb-margin-bottom-small:10px;--awb-margin-left-small:0px;--awb-font-size:var(--awb-typography2-font-size);\"><h2 class=\"fusion-title-heading title-heading-left\" style=\"font-family:var(--awb-typography2-font-family);font-weight:var(--awb-typography2-font-weight);font-style:var(--awb-typography2-font-style);margin:0;letter-spacing:var(--awb-typography2-letter-spacing);text-transform:var(--awb-typography2-text-transform);font-size:1em;line-height:var(--awb-typography2-line-height);\">How Was the Weinig Vario MC 50 Programmed?<\/h2><\/div><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-4\"><p>Stuyts made the parts on a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weinig.com\/it\/legno-massello\/centro-di-lavoro-cnc\/vario-mc-50\/vario-mc-50.html\">Weinig Vario MC 50<\/a><\/strong>, a compact machining center built for solid wood windows and doors.<\/p>\n<p>Three features of this CNC machine matter in a project this demanding:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>5-axis technology<\/strong>: the tool can tilt in relation to the part, which is essential for profiling along an arch and machining joints that aren&#8217;t at right angles;<\/li>\n<li><strong>many options for corner joints<\/strong>: this is what you need when rails and stiles meet the arch at a different angle at each joint;<\/li>\n<li><strong>PowerGrip Motion clamping<\/strong>: it combines single clamps with a continuous clamping bridge. With slot clamping, the clamps can be positioned in 2D, and with the extra Z axis also in 3D. This gives stable grip points even for curved segments and irregular parts. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weinig.it\/it\/\">Weinig<\/a><\/strong> also lists full round arches among the machine&#8217;s applications. <strong>But having the right machine is only the starting point<\/strong>. In practice, EPW connected two worlds: the craftsmanship of Stuyts on one side, and on the other the logic of the CNC machine, a tool that needs exact shapes, sequences and settings.  <\/p>\n<p>This step is often underestimated. The curved and angled parts come off the machine, get assembled on sawhorses in the shop and, after finishing, go to the job site ready to be installed in the Halenstraat arches.
